Lexicon Imagery: Moving Experiences

In digital storytelling, we don’t just communicate through words—we communicate through visceral impact. This gallery is an exploration of the “Human Senses” (or -ceptions) translated into immersive digital experiences. By shifting my lens to the virtual architecture of Second Life, I am exploring how environment design, lighting, and spatial composition converge to trigger specific psychological responses.

Rather than static graphic systems, I am documenting a journey through curated virtual spaces to explore how atmosphere and scale build a “felt sense of place.” From the blue-hued, expansive isolation of a “Cold” sim to the saturated, claustrophobic heat of a “Hot” volcanic region, these visuals serve as a blueprint for high-impact brand strategy. Explore the sensory components below to see how intentional design can map a brand’s journey and build a deep, subconscious connection with its audience.

The following entries document my field research within the digital architecture of Second Life, where I analyze how virtual environments can be engineered to evoke primal, sensory truths.

🌡️ Thermoception (The Energy)

In brand strategy, “Cold” represents precision, logic, and professional distance, while “Hot” represents passion, comfort, and immediate connection. My goal this week was to find the visual and environmental cues that trigger these two extremes.

My journey began in the “Cold”—traversing snowy villages and vast, ice-covered sims. I used the “Cold” to explore Proprioception (my sense of presence in space) by documenting the smooth, gliding movement of ice skating. The sharp, bright-white reflections and blue-tinted atmosphere create a sense of thoughtfully engineered design.

To contrast this, I transitioned to “Hot” by seeking out sources of warmth. I captured the flickering, melty orange light of cuddling by a fire and the high-saturation, high-energy environment of sunbathing on a beach swing. These visuals demonstrate how warmth—whether through lighting or social interaction—builds an immediate, “visceral” connection that invites the audience in.

By documenting my hunt for free gifts and cozy corners, I am illustrating that effective branding isn’t just about the product; it’s about the “reward” at the end of the sensory journey.

🔊 Audioception (The Voice)

Audioception (or Audition) is the physiological process of perceiving sound. It is the brain’s ability to interpret pressure waves traveling through a medium (like air or water) as meaningful information. In this installment of Lexicon Imagery, we explore the spectrum of sound—from the absence of noise to the intensity of mechanical power—represented through the lens of a digital avatar’s journey.

Sound perception is defined by two primary physical characteristics: Frequency (Pitch) and Amplitude (Intensity/Volume).

  • Decibels (dB): We measure volume from the “Quiet” threshold of rustling leaves (20dB) to “Loud” club environments (100dB+).
  • Hertz (Hz): Pitch is determined by the speed of vibrations. “High” sounds like jet engines have rapid frequencies, while “Low” sounds like a deep waterfall resonate at a much slower, rumbling pace.
  • The Mechanism: The human ear uses the cochlea to perform a “Fourier Transform,” a biological calculation that breaks complex sound waves down into their individual frequencies so the brain can categorize them.

To visually represent an invisible sense, the design uses Environmental Contrast:

  • Scale and Presence: The “Quiet” scene uses stillness and organic elements (mushrooms/books) to imply a lack of vibration.
  • Mechanical vs. Magical: To illustrate “High” and “Low” frequencies, the design contrasts the sharp, piercing lines of aviation technology with the heavy, immersive flow of a surreal waterfall populated by flying jellyfish.
  • Interaction: By placing the avatar in the role of a DJ for “Loud,” the design connects the sense of hearing to physical action and social energy, showing that audioception is not just a passive intake, but an active experience.

🍭 Gustaoception (The Taste)

In digital storytelling, “taste” is communicated through visual suggestion. This week, I explored how specific objects and color schemes can trigger a biological response in a viewer—shifting from the “Sweet” allure of a brand to the “Bitter” sophistication of a high-end identity.

Sweet: I captured my avatar enjoying a slice of cake, using multiple camera angles to highlight the soft textures and “pastel” color language. This represents the approachable, inviting side of branding.
Sour: To capture “Sour,” I focused on a lemonade cart. The high-contrast yellows and sharp, citrus motifs serve as a visual “jolt,” similar to a brand that uses vibrant energy to stand out.
Salty: My field research moved to a BBQ featuring kebabs, burgers, and hot dogs. These “Salty” visuals use earthy, grounded tones to represent “reliability” and “savory” satisfaction.
Bitter: Finally, I captured a moment of sipping wine. This “Bitter” palette—darker, deeper, and more refined—mimics a brand strategy built on luxury and acquired taste.
Umami: For the sense of “savoriness” and depth, I used a sweeping pan over a table of nachos and tacos. This “Umami” visual represents a brand with layers—showing how a variety of textures and “ingredients” can converge to create a satisfying, complex identity.
